Lift problems

From a lift moving upwards with a uniform acceleration a = 2 m / s 2 a=\SI[per-mode=symbol]{2}{\meter\per\second\squared} , a man throws a ball vertically upwards with a velocity v 0 = 12 m / s v_0=\SI[per-mode=symbol]{12}{\meter\per\second} relative to the lift. The ball comes back to the man after the time t t . Find the value of t t .

The answer is 2.0.

taking upward direction as positive, let us work in the frame of lift=(g+a) downwards,so as a(real)=-(g+a),initial velocity=-v as the ball will reach the same speed w.r.t lift apply v(real)=u(real)+a(real)t -v=v+(-g-a)t t=2 secs
