One of the 'fathers' is also a grandfather. Therefore the other father is both a son and a father to the grandson. :In other words, the one father is both a son and a father.

Based on the information given you could also have two distinct father/son pairs, in which case the answer would be 4. If the question asked for the least possible number of ice creams bought, then the answer would be uniquely 3 as posted.
