Bess is the 7 - 1 = 6th in the line from the front. This means, that there are 5 people in front of her (or behind her from the back).

Hence, Bess’ position from the back is: 20 5 = 15 t h \text {Hence, Bess' position from the back is: } 20 - 5 = \boxed {15th}

I used a piece of paper and drew 20 dots in a line I marked Alex at 7th from the front and Bess at 6th from the front. Then I counted backwards from the 20th dot and got ... 15 t h 15th

It is easy to note that the sum of positions from the front and back for the same person equals 21 21 ,

Bess is 6 t h 6th from the front being one ahead of Alex,

so her position from the back would be 21 6 = 5 t h 21-6=\boxed{5th}
