Selma, Karen and Jess are training for a marathon. Each week Selma runs 3 times more than Jess. Jess runs half the amount of Karen. How many miles does Selma run if Karen runs 12 miles a week?

If Karen runs 12 miles then Jess runs 6 miles. Selma runs 3 times more than Jess so she runs 18 miles.

The wording "three times more than" (as opposed to "three times as many miles as") is at least confusing (as it can be understood as a 300% increase (4 times), making the right answer 24 miles (not a choice currently offered)).
