The Importance of an Appropriate Promotion

Logic Level 3

It is White's move. What must white play in order to mate in two ?

Clarification: Black plays optimally.

This is the third problem of the set Mate .
a7 Kd7 c8=R c4+ c8=N c8=B e6 c8=Q

White plates c 8 = B ! ! c8=B!! . This forces black to play K c 6 Kc6 then white plays B b 7 # Bb7\# checkmate or K c 4 Kc4 then white plays B e 6 # Be6\# . This is a good example of underpromotion .

Note: A queen promotion would result in a stalemate which is why it doesn't work.

Good observation. But, Black is not forced to play Kc6, what if they move Kc4?
