Max Incircle Problem

Geometry Level 3

A B C \triangle ABC has a perimeter 3 3 . D D is on A B \overline{AB} ,and E E is on A C \overline{AC}

D E \overline{DE} is tangent to the incircle of A B C \triangle ABC and it is parallel to B C \overline{BC} ,then what is the maximum value of D E ? \overline{DE}?

The answer is 0.375.

Let B C = a BC=a and height from A to BC be h h .

Inradius r = A B C 1.5 = a h 3 r=\dfrac{\triangle ABC}{1.5}=\dfrac{a h}{3} .

A B C \triangle ABC is similar to A D E \triangle ADE .

a h = D E h 2 r D E = a ( 3 2 a ) 3 \dfrac{a}{h}=\dfrac{DE}{h-2r} \Rightarrow DE=\dfrac{a(3-2a)}{3}

Finding a maximum for a quadratic function we get the value of 3 8 = 0.375 \dfrac{3}{8}=\boxed{0.375}
