The first 10 positive even numbers are

2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10 , 12 , 14 , 16 , 18 , 20. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Solution 1: Observe that we can pair off this set from the front and the back, to get sets with sum of 22. Specifically, 2 + 20 = 22 2 + 20 = 22 , 4 + 18 = 22 4 + 18 = 22 , 6 + 16 = 22 6 + 16 = 22 , 8 + 14 = 22 8 + 14 = 22 , 10 + 12 = 22 10 + 12 = 22 . This tells us that their mean is 22 2 = 11 \frac{22}{2} = 11 .

Solution 2: The mean of a set is their average. Hence, their mean is

2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 + 14 + 16 + 18 + 20 10 = 11. \frac{2+4+6+8+10+12+14+16+18+20} { 10} = 11.
