Let a and b be the number of days on which Eric writes 2 and 3 poems, respectively.
Let c and d be the number of days on which Marina writes 2 and 3 poems, respectively.
Then we have 3 equations to work with, namely
(i) 2 a + 3 b = 4 3 , (ii) 2 c + 3 d = 6 1 and (iii) a + b = c + d .
Subtracting (i) from (ii) gives us equation (iv), 2 ( c − a ) + 3 ( d − b ) = 1 8 .
Rearranging (iii), we have that c − a = − ( d − b ) .
Plugging this into (iv) gives us that d − b = 1 8 .
Now from (i) and (ii) it is clear that b ≥ 1 and d ≤ 1 9 . Given these conditions, and that d − b = 1 8 , the only possible solutions are b = 1 and d = 1 9 .
With b = 1 we have that a = 2 0 , giving us a final solution of a + b = 2 1 .
