Meet Donny Notrump

Logic Level 1

[Standard American coins come in four denominations. Pennies are worth 1 cent, nickels 5 cents, dimes 10 cents and quarters 25 cents.]

Neighborhood boy Donny Notrump, resident of Cleveland, Ohio, precocious 10-year old logician, mathematician-in-training and expert bridge player, comes over to you holding something in his left fist.

"I have two coins in my fist," he proclaims. "They have a total value of 30 cents. One of them is not a quarter."

Is it possible that Donny is telling the truth?

Yes No

Donny has 2 coins in his hand. A nickel and a quarter. They add to 5 + 25 = 30 cents.

And true to his word, one of them -- the nickel -- is indeed not a quarter.

His girlfriend Kelly Conaway brags that Donny is proficient at alternative truths, too.
