Meeting at a restaurant

Logic Level 1

Three men, Albert, Ben and Charles, and three women, Denise, Evelyn and Fiona, met at a restaurant. The conditions are as follows:

Condition 1: Each of the men is married to exactly one of the women, and vice versa.

Condition 2: Albert's wife and Denise's husband do not know each other.

Condition 3: Evelyn's husband and Ben's wife do not know each other.

Condition 4: Ben knows everybody.

Who is Fiona's husband?

Condition 3 implies Ben is not married to Evelyn. Since Ben knows everybody, he also can't be married to Denise by condition 2. Therefore, Ben is married to Fiona.

Cool! This is a good explanation!

From condition 2 we know Denise isn't married to Albert, because their spouses don't know each other. Denise also can't be married to Bed, because he knows everyone. Meaning Denise has to be married to Charles.

Using the same logic on condition 3 we know Evelyn can't be married to Ben, meaning she is married to Albert. The only two remaining are Ben and Fiona, thus they are married.

Ben who knows everybody else can be the husband of neither Denise nor Evelyn, so his wife is Fiona. Albert is married to Evelyn and Denise to Charles. Evelyn didn't know Charles and Fiona didn't know Albert.
