Melissa's Dive

Geometry Level 3

The fanciest dive that was ever dove
Was done by Melissa of Coconut Grove.
She bounced on the board and flew into the air
With a twist of her head and a twirl of her hair.
She did thirty-four jackknives, backflipped and spun,
Quadrupled gainered, and reached for the sun,
And then somersaulted nine times and a quarter
And looked down and saw that the pool had no water.
-Shel Silverstein

Assuming that a jackknife is 180 degrees, and all the other diving steps (backflip, spin, gainer, somersault) are 360 degrees, how many degrees did Melissa turn?

The answer is 11610.

jacknife = 180º backflip = spin = gainer = somersault = 360

34 jacknives = 34 * 180 = 17 * 360, let´s separe 17

1 backflip = 1 * 360, let´s separe 1

1 spun (from spin) = 1 * 360, let´s separe 1

4 gainers = 4*360, let´s separe 4

9 and a quarter of somersault = 9 * 360, let´s separe 9

Then, sum what was separed: (17+1+1+4+9) * 360 = 32 * 360 = 11520

and sum a quarter of somersault (a quarter of 360 is 90): 11520 + 90 = 11610
