What is the least number of moves for black to checkmate the white king? Assume that both black and white play optimally. It's black turn to move.

  1. You should clarify that it's black turn to move. Usually in chess puzzles, white moves first.
  2. Ideally, the board should have a1 in the lower left corner.
  3. For the solution to be complete, it should also explain why we cannot mate in 2 moves.
