We observe that the right column only contains square numbers, 3 2 3^2 , 5 2 5^2 and 4 2 4^2 . So there must be some way to get 3 3 , 5 5 and 4 4 from the other two numbers in each row. And in fact, 1 + 2 = 3 1+2=3 and 3 + 1 = 4 3+1=4 , so we need ? + 2 = 25 ? = 3 \text{?}+2=25 \Leftrightarrow \text{?}=3 . This means that "?" should be replaced by 3.
