While squaring a non-zero number John added the number to itself instead of multiplying with itself. John still got the correct answer. Find the number John started with.

n × n = n + n n 2 = 2 n n = 2 \begin{aligned} n \times n & = n+n \\ n^2&=2n \\ \Rightarrow n&= \boxed { 2} \end{aligned}
