Let's see this:

Carat=12--22--18

Grams=X--40-X--40

Then:

(12 X)+(22 (40-X))=18*40

12X+880-22X=720

160=10X

X=16

We already have 12 carats grams now:

40-X=40-16=24

Answer: Used 24 grams of 22 carat
