To find the difference between the amount of flour Hector has already added and the amount the recipe calls for, subtract 2 3 \frac {2}{3} from 4 3 4 4 \frac {3}{4} :

4 3 4 2 3 = 19 4 2 3 = 19 4 × 3 3 2 3 × 4 4 = 57 12 8 12 = 49 12 \begin{aligned} 4\frac {3}{4} - \frac {2}{3} &= \frac {19}{4} - \frac {2}{3} \\ &= \frac {19}{4} \times \frac {3}{3} - \frac {2}{3} \times \frac {4}{4} \\ &= \frac {57}{12} - \frac {8}{12} \\ &= \frac {49}{12} \\ \end{aligned}

Hence a + b = 49 + 12 = 61 a+b = 49 + 12 = 61 .
