Mole fractions?

Chemistry Level 3

An aqueous solution weighing 100 gram has 60 gram of pure chalk. Then find the mole fraction of the chalk.

If the answer can be expressed as a b \frac{a}{b} , where a a and b b are coprime positive integers, then submit the value of a + b a + b .

Moles of chalk ( C a C O 3 ) (CaCO_3) = 60 100 \dfrac{60}{100}
Moles of water ( H 2 O ) (H_2O) = 100 60 18 = 20 9 \dfrac{100 - 60}{18} = \dfrac{20}{9}

Mole fraction of chalk = 3 5 3 5 + 20 9 \dfrac{\dfrac{3}{5}}{\dfrac{3}{5} + \dfrac{20}{9}}
= 27 127 \dfrac{27}{127}

\therefore a + b = 27 + 127 = 154 \boxed{154}
