I went to the book shop and spent one half of the money that was in my purse.

When I came out, I found that I had as many cents as I had dollars and half as many dollars as I had cents when I went in. Find the money in my purse (in dollars) when I entered the store. You need to write the answer as, say, 12.34

The answer is 99.98.

Let's say I have x dollars Y cents

Initial money : 100x + y

After coming out y/2 dollars x cents

Final money : 100y/2 + x

Initial money = 2 * Final money

100x + y = 2(100y/2 + x)

98x = 99y

x= 99

y = 98

Initial amount 99.98

Question is not complete. There can be infinitely many values all satisfying 98x=99y

why final money is y/2 dollars and x cents ( not x/2 cents)? i spent half of the 'money' not dollars!

let the amount of dollars u take is x and cents u have is y so initially u had x dollars and finally y/2 dollars and initially u had y cents and now u have x cents

now converting everything to cents - initially , 100x + y cents finally , 100(y/2) + x cents

so we have , 100x + y = 2{ 50y + x} .... initial amount is 2 times final amount

98x = 99y smallest values = 0,0 - 99,98 0,0 is silly ... so answer is 99.98 dollars u can actually have infinitely many values for the equation but actually i guess the question must specify that least +ve value has to be considered
