Y'all it is Chinese New Year (or Spring Festival) today! (Feb. 8th) This year is monkey year so I thought about a problem about monkeys. There are many monkeys in the forest. The square of 1 8 \frac{1}{8} of the total number of monkeys are jumping in the forest, while there are 12 monkeys left resting. At least how many monkeys are there in the forest?

Let the total number of monkeys be x x . Then we have the equation 1 8 \frac{1}{8} x 2 x^{2} + 12 = x x . Solve this equation and we get 16 , 64 {16,64} as the roots. Because this question is asking for the least number, the answer to the question is 16 \boxed{16} .
