This is the way I solved it...

3 x = 24 + x 3 x x = 24 2 x = 24 x = 12 3x=24+x\\ 3x-x=24\\ 2x=24\\ x=12

It can also be inversely solved as

M = M = Age of Matt

m = m = Age of mom

M = m 24 M=m-24

M = ( 3 M ) 24 M=(3M)-24

0 = 2 M 24 0=2M-24

24 = 2 M 24=2M

12 = M \boxed{12}=M

His mom would be 36 36 .
