A father and his son were sat at a table when the son asked
"Dad, how old is mum?"
To which his dad replied,
"Well son, I'll help you work it out. One year I was twice your mother's age, but the next year I was only one and a half times her age."
If the father is 44 right now, how old is the mother?

Let ′ x ′ be be father's age and ′ y ′ be mother's age once a upon a time.
We have x = 2 y and x + 1 = 2 3 ( y + 1 ) or x = 2 3 y + 1 . Thus 2 y = 2 3 y + 1 or 4 y = 3 y + 1 or y = 1 .
Hence x = 2 . Hence mother's age is one less than father's age.
Hence when father is 4 4 years old, mother will be 4 3 years old.
