My Valentine's day problem

Logic Level 1

Eight friends are going to the eighth-grade Valentine’s Dance together. None of the couples’ names start with the same letter, no one dates someone with the same color eyes, and none of the sweethearts are the same age, and they are all in a heterosexual relationship.

Edward (12) and Leah (11) have blue eyes.
Liam (11) and Esme (13) have brown eyes.
Sam (13) and Bella (12) have green eyes.
Brady (12) and Sasha (13) have hazel eyes.

Whose date is Sasha?

Clarifications :
Edward, Liam, Sam and Brady are boys.
Leah, Esme, Bella and Sasha are girls.

(Bonus points if you can identify the source of all these names!)

Answer: Edward and Sasha, Liam and Bella, Brady and Esme, Sam and Leah.

Bonus answer: The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.

Can you add more information about who is male and who is female? Also state the the couples are all male-female couples.

Unless Sasha was different from the others and went with either Leah or Bella, the only guy on that list what would be Sasha's date is Edward .

Brady-esme Sam-Leah Edward-sasha Liam-bella

Edward can only go with sasha as per rules mentioned

I started checking Edwarda pair and found the answer, since edward cannot be with leah due to their Eye color, cannot be with Esme due to the name letter and cannot be with Bella due to the age, therefore the only option left is Sasha.... Although it is a bit mean not having Edward and Bella together....

Edward and Leah both have blue eyes. Edward and esme both have names with the same first letter. Edward and Bella are both 12. Edward must date Sasha

Sasha with Edward They're from the Twilight saga!

Edward and Sasha, Twilight Series for Bonus answer.

If it is boy/girl, then it's Edward and Sasha.

The only option for Sam is Leah. With Leah taken, Brady must date Esme. That leaves Edward's only option as Sasha.

That is assuming that no two friends of the same gender are going together. Another solution is Sam goes with Edward, Bella goes with Liam, Brady goes with Esme, and Leah goes with Sasha. There are other solutions, too, so for there to be only one solution there should be an additional clause in the problem restricting who will date whom.

Good point, it's not said in the problem they're all hetero hahaha

Alan Brandes - 6 years, 4 months ago

You are right I did not think of that. It should be stated in the problem that all of the couples are one boy and one girl.

And for us geeks over thirty, we might need help with some of the names being male or female. Sam, Sasha, Liam could be either. Had to figure out that the names were listed male first, female second. (Sorry, geeks over thirty don't know Twilight.)

I thought about that too! I realized that there would be additional solutions without that assumption, so I brought it in as it would limit it to one solution.
