Naema's Juice Shopping

Naema goes to the store to buy juice for her birthday party. The store sells jugs of orange juice, apple juice, and cranberry juice. The store also sells frozen cans of grape juice, peach juice, mango juice, and pear juice. If Naema wants only one can or jug of juice, how many different choices does she have?

The answer is 7.

Can select 1 jug of juice from the 3 juices. Number of ways to select 1 jug of juice from the 3 juices = 3C1 = 3

Can select 1 can of juice from the 4 juice cans. Number of ways to select 1 can of juice from the 4 juices = 4C1 = 4

Total ways = 4 + 3 = 7

Naema has to choose any one out of the 7 choices, so she can choose in = 7C1 = 7 ways.

As the sum rule states , it will be only applicable then when you can't do two or more operation at a time. If we look into our problem , it states"Naema wants only one can or jug of juice". That means either she has to choose 1 can (where she has 4 option) or 1 jug(where she has 3 option). As she can't take both jug & can, according to sum rule the ans is: 4+3=7. :-D
