Since the clothes are 40 % 40 \% off, they cost 100 % − 40 % = 60 % 100 \% - 40 \% = 60 \% of their original price. Since Mary pays 100 % − 30 % = 70 % 100 \% - 30 \% = 70 \% of the sale price, or 70 % × 60 % = 42 % 70 \% \times 60 \% = 42 \% of the original price, hence, the total percent discount that Mary gets is 100 % − 42 % = 58 % 100 \% - 42 \% = 58 \% .
