Say x = 42 + 42 + 42 + . . . . . . x=\sqrt{42 + \sqrt{42 + \sqrt{ 42 + ......}}}

Then x 2 = 42 + 42 + 42 + 42 + . . . . . . x^{2}=42+\sqrt{42 + \sqrt{42 + \sqrt{ 42 + ......}}}

So x 2 42 = 42 + 42 + 42 + . . . . . . = x x^{2}-42=\sqrt{42 + \sqrt{42 + \sqrt{ 42 + ......}}}=x

Therefore, x 2 x 42 = 0 x^{2}-x-42=0

Solving, we get x = 6 x=-6 or x = 7 x=7

Obviously, x = 6 x=-6 is impossible, so x = 7 x=7 .
