This solution is simple The pattern is 77,49,36,18,__ now its clear that 7.7=49 4.9=36 3.6=18 1.8=8 so the answer is 8.

The next term in the sequence is 8.

This is because , the next number is obtained by the product of the digits of the previous number.

Right. Can there be a number before 77 77 ? Why or why not?

No , Since a sequence should be followed so according to the sequence the number before 77 should be a number whose digits when multiplied gives 77 i.e 11x7 so the number should be 117 or 171 or 711 but here the multiplication will not be unique since there are three numbers. So a number can be before only when it follows the sequence as well as have a unique multiplication @ChallengeMaster

you are exactly right pal

no this is not possible as 77 only has factors 1,7,11,77 So by any type of multiplication is not possible to obtain 77

What do you mean?

The sequence starts with 77 and the question asks for finding the next term and not about the previous.

Multiply the two digits of the first digit to get the second number. Multiply the two digits to get the third number, and so on. So, you have to multiply the digits of the fourth number to get the fifth number. 1 x 8 = 8. 8 is the fifth number.
