Nigel's Salary

Algebra Level 3

Nigel earns $4.76 an hour at the gas station. Each week, 25% of his total pay is deducted for taxes. In addition, he pays $25 dollars a week, after taxes, for union dues.

What is the least whole number of hours Nigel needs to work every week so that he earns at least $100?

35 37 34 36

If t be the minimum number of hrs Nigel must work to make $100/wk, then we require:

4.76 (1 - 0.25) t - 25 > 100 (i)

which solving for t gives t > 35.01 hr. So, he must work at least 36 hr/wk.

Your solution makes sense but I don't understand why "more than 35" isn't the correct answer to choose. If he has to work at least 36, then I don't see why it makes sense to assert that he has to work "more" than 36, since that is a contradiction.

Indeed, I agree that the wrong option is counted as 'correct' here.
