Non-ideal case!!!

What is the Ammeter reading (in amperes)?

Given -

  • Area of cross section of wire = 3 c m 2 3cm^2

  • Resistance across AB (Internal Resistance of battery ) = 20 Ω 20 \Omega

  • Resistance of ammeter = 5 Ω 5 \Omega

  • E.M.F. of battery = 500 V 500V

The answer is 10.00.

There are six segments. Use the formula R = ρ L A R = \frac{\rho L}{A} . Then add 35 Ω 35 \Omega of additional resistance for a total of 50 Ω 50 \Omega . The current through the ammeter is 500 V 50 Ω = 10 A \frac{500V}{50 \Omega} = 10 A . I used a spreadsheet to do the calculations.

This is a straightforward question in which all the resistors are in series. We will have to calculate the resistance of all the wires and then use the ohms law.
