Why Are The Northern Lights So Colorful?

Why does the aurora borealis show different colors?

It depends on which gas is being excited by the electrons and on how much energy is being exchanged. The industrial effluents i.e. the gases are the cause of this. It is white light but due to refraction only certain colors can be seen. These are the different coloured radiation from the sun. Gases at low temperature energize and react with other gases to form different coloured compounds. The carbon dioxide and methane molecules gets excited and break, releasing a huge amount of energy.
