x 2 = x , 16 = + 4 \large \sqrt {x^2} = |x|, \therefore \sqrt {16} = +4

Typo: It should be x 2 \sqrt{x^2}

By x \sqrt{x} , we mean principal root which is always positive. So 16 = 4 \sqrt{16} = 4 and not 4 -4 .
We can write 4 -4 only when it is stated that x 2 = 16 x^2 = 16
