Opposite Trains

Algebra Level 2

Neal has decided to travel from Dhaka to Chittagong by train. He chose the 'BD Express' to travel. The BD Express leaves in every 1 hour from both Dhaka and Chittagong. It takes 5 hours to reach Chittagong from Dhaka. The train doesn't stop at any station on its route.

How many trains will Neal see coming from opposite direction?

A train leaves in every hour. So, when Neal's train starts, there is already 4 trains on the track. After his departure, it will take 5 hours to reach destination. So, another 5 trains will depart from the opposite side. Thus, he'll see 4+5 =9 trains. Answer =9.

But I think it should be 8. Because, the last hour i.e. at the time when he has already reached his destination, the opposite train just will be started. So, it's not possible to see the opposite train running/coming. The answer 4+4 = 8.

No, think. Because if you divide the whole path in 5 parts as it takes 5 hours to reach destination, you will see that in each part the train will see 1 train. So, in the halfway at the last part he will see the 9th train.
