Following the order of operations, we have

5 + 3 × 12 ÷ [ 2 ( 1 + 1 ) ] = 5 + 3 × 12 ÷ [ 2 ( 2 ) ] = 5 + 3 × 12 ÷ 4 = 5 + 36 ÷ 4 = 5 + 9 = 14 \begin{aligned} 5 + 3\times 12\div [2 (1+1)] &= 5 + 3\times 12\div [2 (2)] \\ &= 5 + 3\times 12\div 4 \\ &= 5 + 36 \div 4 \\ &= 5 + 9\\ &= 14 \\ \end{aligned}
