Order of reaction 1

Chemistry Level 2

For a particular reaction, the plot of concentration of the reactant versus time was found to be as shown in the figure below. What is the order of reaction?

To solve this problem, you need to know order of reaction .

Zero order Half Order First order Second order

Half life time of reaction is 10 minutes \color{#3D99F6}{\text{10 minutes}} .That is Time required for initial concentration of 1.6 units to drop down to 1.6/2=0.8 units.See the image in question.

Now, if we assume initial concentration to be 0.8 units then half life time will again be 10 minutes \color{#3D99F6}{\text{10 minutes}} .Same is the half life time when initial concentration is assumed to be 0.2 units.

We notice that half life time is independent of initial concentration of reactant which is a characteristic of first order reaction \color{#20A900}{\text{first order reaction}} .

mr. Aamir it should be zero order bcoz for first order reaction half time is independent of initial concentration

No it is first order. Because for first order the half life of the reaction remains constant.
