An Aromatic Compound "A" of molecular formula ( C 7 H 7 Cl ) (\text{C}_7\text{H}_7\text{Cl} ) reacts with HNO 3 \text{HNO}_3 to yield an Aromatic Compound "B" of molecular formula ( C 7 H 6 O ) (\text{C}_7\text{H}_6\text{O} ) . Compound B is reduced by strong reducing agents to yield Compound "C" of molecular formula ( C 7 H 8 O ) ( \text{C}_7\text{H}_8\text{O} ) which is used as general solvent for ink, paints and lacquers. What is compound C?

Benzaldehyde Benzene Acetophenone Benzyl Alcohol

Compound A is benzyl chloride. The chlorine's electronegativity increases the partial positive charge on the non-aromatic carbon, which opens it to oxidation (by HNO 3 \text{HNO}_3 ) to benzoic acid - compound B.

Benzoic acid, after reduction (which usually stops at alcohols), gives benzyl alcohol.
