Paint The White House Gold

Algebra Level 1

Two quantities, x x and y , y, are said to be inversely proportional if scaling up one makes the other scale down by the same factor.

For example, the number of days and the number of painters available are inversely related in the following question:

If 10 painters can paint the White House gold in 30 days, then with 20 painters on the job, how many days will be needed?

30 days 60 days 20 days 15 days 10 days

The question is asking us to determine what happens to the number of days when we scale up the number of painters by a factor of 2. Since the number of painters and the number of days are inversely proportional, it follows that the number of days will scale down by a factor of 2. So, the number of days needed with 20 painters on the job is 30 2 = 15. \frac{30}{2} = 15.
