Partition Law Problem 1

Chemistry Level 2

If one liter of water can dissolve 100 g 100\text{ g} organic compound X X and I use 1 L 1\text{ L} of ether to extract it twice (which means each time I only use 0.5 L 0.5\text{ L} of ether), what is the total mass in grams of X X can I get with the two extractions?

First extraction: (100-x/1)/(x/0.5)=1/2 ( Partition Law) x=50g

Second extraction: (50-x/1)/(x/0.5)=1/2 (Partition Law) x=25g.

Total extraction= 75g
