Apparently the story goes that children were chewing on lead so they replaced it with graphite.

After (short) search, you seem right. In this document https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mine de plomb#Historique Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were using plumba (several plumbum), lead disks rolling along a rule.

I am not good in English and made no search in Shakespeare language, but the article mention the German 'Bleistift' and the English 'lead pencil'.

Nowadays, i do not know if they use the same material for "pens" (graphite pens with wood or plastic coating), and "pencils" (color ones).

Here's a myth buster: There is no lead in pencils. Rather, the core is made up of a non-toxic mineral called graphite. The common name “pencil lead” is due to an historic association with the stylus made of lead in ancient Roman times.

Interesting. It would be in that case, not the first time Wikipedia transmit a false information :

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mine de plomb#Historique argues that Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were using plumba (several plumbum), lead disks rolling along a rule.

I am ready to hear (read) any further information, and encourage you to correct articles in different languages if you have historical proof or clue.

I have no historian documents. If we are neutral, we shall check which among wikipedia and wiki published the false information. Before that question i believed that "graphite" was a kind of coal - i made a search and saw they were not the same - tey are "differents allotropes naturels du carbone". What is "true" today according to the (elec) document we have may be false tomorrow, and we cannot prove it was false yesterday, because we have no archive of former knowledge.

Just search it up on Google

But we should try to do it ourselves, shouldn't we?

yeah true but why do many people think that the lead is metal? weird.

Annie Li - 4 years, 2 months ago

Pencil lead is different from lead(Pb). Pencil lead is a non-metal (graphite) whereas lead(Pb) is a metal.

Sorry but it makes no sense to me. I have never done chemistry.
