Let's say that the price of the item is x x . Then by using information in the problem we can make an equation:

x ( 1 25 100 ) ( 1 10 100 ) ( 1 + y 100 ) = x x(1 - \frac{25}{100})(1 - \frac{10}{100})(1 + \frac{y}{100}) = x , Let's multiply both sides by x x and simplify the equation a little bit:

0.675 ( 1 + y 100 ) = 1 0.675(1 + \frac{y}{100}) = 1 , now we can take either one of 2 ways to calculate answer:

1) 1 + y 100 = 1 0.675 1+ \frac{y}{100} = \frac{1}{0.675}

y 100 = 1 0.675 0.675 \frac{y}{100} = \frac{1 - 0.675}{0.675}

y = 325 0.675 y = \frac{325}{0.675}

y 48 y ≈ \boxed{48}

Or we could have done this problem like that:

2) 0.675 + 0.00675 y = 1 0.675 + 0.00675y = 1

0.00675 y = 0.325 0.00675y = 0.325

y = 0.325 0.00675 y = \frac{0.325}{0.00675}

y 48 y ≈ \boxed{48}

Very nice problem!
