pH analysis

Chemistry Level 3

We have a 1 L 1 \text{ L} solution containing 0.05 M 0.05 \text{ M} of HF \text{HF} and 0.2 M 0.2 \text{ M} of CH 3 COOH \text{CH}_3 \text{COOH} . If the pH \text{pH} of the solution is denoted by P P , then what is the value of 100 P \lfloor 100P \rfloor ?

pK a \text{pK}_a of CH 3 COOH \text{CH}_3 \text{COOH} is 4.75 4.75 , and pK a \text{pK}_a of HF \text{HF} is 3.2 3.2

No approximations please, also please use wolfram alpha for calculations that can't be done with pen and paper.

The answer is 224.

Simple application of Common Ion effect.No approximations can be made the eq are x ( y + x ) / ( 0.05 x ) x(y+x)/(0.05-x) = K ( H F ) K(HF) and y ( y + x ) / ( 0.2 y ) = K ( A c e t i c a c i d ) y(y+x)/(0.2-y)=K(Acetic acid) .Now H + H+ concentration is x + y x+y .So p H = l o g ( x + y ) . = 2.2479 pH=-log(x+y).=2.2479
