IV drugs enter the bloodstream directly, so they do not need to be absorbed by the body and their bioavailability is 100%. Drugs going through the gastrointestinal tract must be absorbed by the stomach or intestine, and usually some of the drug is not absorbed, so the bioavailability is less than 100%. Many factors are involved in absorption, such as the pH or the stomach and the size of the drug molecules.
Drugs applied to the skin must also absorb through one of the body’s protective layers.
