Pick Your Prize

Logic Level 1

Congratulations! You have just won a competition and you get to choose a prize. The three prizes are: 1. $1,000,000 2. $500,000 3. $250,000

There are in boxes A, B, C and D but you don't know which prize is in which box. Moreover, Box D could contain one of the three prizes or contain nothing at all. You can do one of 3 things: 1. Pick a box and take your prize from that box. 2. Pick two different boxes and take the greater of the two prizes. 3. Eliminate two boxes and take the prize from one of the remaining boxes. Which method has the highest chance of getting the $1,000,000 prize?

Method 1 Method 2 Method 3

Intuitively Method 2 makes sense, there you get to compare between 2 boxes, and both other options only allow you to see 1 box.

Obviously if you pick method 2 you can have a higher risk bc if you pick two boxes one with nothing one with $250,000 you still get something. Since there is only one box with nothing this solution is guarnteeing you money. If you did method one you might get nothing. if you pick method 3 you still might get nothing. Method 2 is the only efficent way of getting something.
