Pizza Parlor

Algebra Level 3

A group of six friends are deciding what to get at the local pizza parlor.

Judy wants mozzarella sticks, and so does Cookie. 3/12 of the rest of their friends also want mozzarella sticks. Alice wants pepperoni, and 6/10 of the rest of her friends do too. 4/10 disagree, and would rather have three cheese with pesto. Everyone wants a small pizza to themselves. Diamond suggests that they have a dessert pizza afterwards, and either split a medium one or have individual single-serve dessert pizzas. 3/5 of the rest of her friends agree to the dessert pizza idea.

Arnold quickly points out that dessert pizza may not be in the budget, and urges them to check the prices on the board. The prices are as follows:

Mozzarella Sticks (single serving) - $ 3.50 {\$3.50} Small Pizza - $ 4.50 {\$4.50} Substitute Pesto - $ 0.50 {\$0.50} Add Pepperoni - $ 1.25 {\$1.25} Small Dessert Pizza - $ 5.00 {\$5.00} Medium Dessert Pizza - $ 11.50 {\$11.50}

Their budget is $72.50. If possible, they would prefer to get the Small Dessert Pizzas. If not, they're fine with the medium. If they can't afford the medium, they will ditch the dessert pizza idea. They are also paying 9.8% sales tax and wish to leave a 10% tip(they will calculate the tip after tax). They round to the nearest cent for their price.

Will they be able to afford dessert pizza? If so, which one? How much money will they end up spending?

Yes; Small Dessert Pizzas; $63.50 No; Without the Dessert Pizzas, they will spend $52.54 No; Without the Dessert Pizzas, they will spend $43.50 Yes; Medium Dessert Pizza; $66.43 Yes; Medium Dessert Pizza; $60.39 Yes; Small Dessert Pizzas; $69.72 None of These

First we have to find out how many people want each food.

Judy, Cookie, and 3/12, or 1/4, of their remaining friends want mozzarella sticks. That makes 3 people who want mozzarella sticks.

Alice and 6/10, or 3/5, of the rest of her friends want pepperoni, so 4 people want pepperoni. The other 4/10, or 2/5, of her friends disagree, and prefer pesto, so 2 people want pesto.

Everyone wants a small pizza, so that would make 6 small pizzas.

Diamond suggests getting dessert pizza, and 3/5 of the rest of her friends are on board, so that makes 4 people who want dessert pizza.

They can either get a Medium Dessert Pizza, 4 Small Dessert Pizzas, or no Dessert Pizzas, whichever fits their budget. It is stated that they would prefer the Small Dessert Pizzas, though, so if they can afford them, they will get them. Their budget is $72.50.

Now it's time to calculate!

3 people want mozzarella, so 3 3.50 = $10.5. Everyone wants a small pizza, so add 4.50 6 = $27 onto $10.5 to get $37.5. Next, add the two pesto substitutions on to get 38.5. Add the four pepperoni additions to get 43.5.

Without the tax, tip, and dessert pizza, our price is $43.50. Now, add on the Small Dessert Pizza prices to see if that option is affordable. When we add on the price of 4 Small Dessert Pizzas, which is $20, we get $63.50. The tax is 9.8%, or .098, so multiply that by the cost to get the amount of tax we're paying, then add it onto the price. Do the same with the tip, 10% or 0.1, and we get 76.6953. Round this to nearest cent, and we get $76.70, which is over our budget. That's not gonna work.

This time, add the price of a Medium Dessert Pizza and then add the tax and tip just like we did with the Small Pizzas. We get $66.43, which is well within our budget.

Good news, Diamond! We can get the dessert pizza, no problem! c:
