Pizza

On Sunday, a pizza store produces pizzas in batches of 68, and usually make between 1000 and 1500 pizzas. The store only sells pizza in batches of 20.

At the end of the day, if the store is left with 32 pizzas, how many pizzas were sold?

The answer is 1260.

Let the number of pizzas be 68 x 68x as pizzas are produced in batches of 68 68 . The same number is equal to 20 y + 32 20y+32 as the pizzas are sold in batches of 20 20 and still 32 32 are left.

Since 68 x 68x lies in the range ( 1000 , 1500 ) (1000,1500) , x x lies in the range ( 15 , 22 ) (15,22) ,

Since 20 y + 32 20y+32 ends in 2 2 , the only multiple of 68 68 in the range is 68 × 19 = 1292 68×19=1292 .

The pizzas sold= 1292 1292 -pizzas left= 1292 32 = 1260 1292-32=\boxed {1260}

Thanks for showing the steps. This allows people who couldn’t solve the problem to understand exactly how it’s done.
