First calculate the total number of students failed in each subject:
Mathematics: 10 Physics: 11 Chemistry: 14 Biology: 8 Geology: 12
Now we need to calculate the minimum students who cleared all five exams which means we need to subtract the maximum failed students from 100. So instead of making combinations adding all the number of students failed in the examination will give us the maximum number of students failed.
Minimum number of students who cleared the exam ⇒ 1 0 0 − ( 1 0 + 1 1 + 1 4 + 8 + 1 2 ) = 4 5
