Geometry Level 1

Two poles of height of 10 m 10\text{ m} and 15 m 15\text{ m} stand vertically on a plane ground. If the distance between their feet is 5 3 m 5\sqrt3\text{ m} , find the distance between their tops.

1 solution

Consider the diagram on my left. By pythagorean theorem, we have

x = 5 2 + ( 5 3 ) 2 = 100 = 10 x=\sqrt{5^2+(5\sqrt{3})^2}=\sqrt{100}=10 .

Note: The diagram is not true to scale.
