Elected candidate got 62 a 100 \dfrac{62a}{100} votes.

Other candidate got 38 a 100 \dfrac{38a}{100} votes.

We have,

68 a 100 38 a 100 = 144 24 a 100 = 144 a = 600 \dfrac{68a}{100} - \dfrac{38a}{100} = 144\\\dfrac{24a}{100} =144\\\implies \boxed{a = 600}
