Geometry Level 1

I had a red cube like this I joined 26 more such cube(red cubes) to form a bigger cube(3 by 3). And painted it blue from all its six sides from the outside, like this.

How many smaller cubes are painted red from all the six sides?

There are three layers, so the all-red cubes may only be in the middle layer. The middle layer is made of nine cubes, all but one of which are part of at least one side. Therefore there is only one all-red cube.
