Practice: Relative Mass

Chemistry Level 2

Calculate the mass percentage of element N \ce{N} in N H X 4 NO X 3 \ce{NH_4{NO}_3} .

If your answer is 70%, write it as 0.70.

4 solutions

N = 14.01 g/mol (2 mol) = 28.02g N
H = 1.008 g/mol (4 mol) = 4.032g H
O = 16.00 g/mol (3 mol) = 48g O
Total mass = 80.052g

*We want to calculate the mass percentage of element N only, therefore, g N/g total = 28.02g/80.052g = 0.3500 or 35.00%

ram of 4H = 4*1 = 4

ram of 2N = 2*14 = 28

ram of 3O = 3*16 = 48

so total relative mass is 4+28+48 = 80.

28/80 = 0.35

80g of NH4NO3 contains 28g of N. Therefore, 100g NH4NO3 will contain 35g of N.
