Pressure can make you do wonders!

Chemistry Level 2

H 2 + C l 2 2 H C l \large H_2+Cl_2 \rightleftharpoons 2HCl If this reaction is carried out in a container at a pressure equal to atmospheric pressure, and pressure is increased by 5 5 times, then find the new value of K p K_p .

Given K p K_p for this reaction at atmospheric pressure is 12 12 .

Details and Assumptions:

K p K_p is Equilibrium Constant in terms of Pressure.

H 2 + C l 2 2 H C l H_{2} + Cl_{2} \rightleftarrows 2HCl

K p = P H C l 2 P H 2 P C l 2 = P a t m 2 χ H C l 2 P a t m 2 χ H 2 χ C l 2 = χ H C l 2 χ H 2 χ C l 2 Kp=\frac{P_{HCl}^{2}}{P_{H_{2}}P_{Cl_{2}}}=\frac{P_{atm}^{2} \chi_{HCl}^{2}}{P_{atm}^{2} \chi_{H_{2}} \chi_{Cl_{2}}}=\frac{\chi_{HCl}^{2}}{\chi_{H_{2}} \chi_{Cl_{2}}}

So, Kp doesn't depend of pressure.
