Problem from 1895!

Geometry Level 2

Are you proud of receiving "excellent" in secondary school for math? We shall now see whether you would have gotten that in 1895!

If you have no idea, you automatically do not receive an "excellent"!

25 litres of water pour out of a fountain every minute. It showers down into a cube-shaped basin with sides of length 1.5 metres. In how many hours will this basin be full?

The answer is 2.25.

The conversion factor we need to keep in mind is that 1 m 3 = 1000 L . 1 m^{3} = 1000 L.

So the volume of the cube-shaped basin is ( 1.5 m ) 3 = 3.375 m 3 = 3375 L . (1.5 m)^{3} = 3.375 m^{3} = 3375 L.

At an inflow rate of 25 L m i n 25 \frac{L}{min} the basin will take 3375 25 = 135 min = 2.25 \dfrac{3375}{25} = 135 \min = \boxed{2.25} hours to fill.

Augh... I forgot to convert minutes to hours.

I have failed to reach excellence of yesteryear. :(
